Molded into a deep section and mounted at the bottom of your crankcase is a mechanism
built from a thin piece of steel called an oil pan. Oil collects in the oil pan
from the sides of the crankcase when your engine is turned off. The drain plug
and oil pump both use the oil pan as a host. Once oil is gathered in your Fiat
oil pan, it is continuously tossed around. Because of this tossing, an oil leak
will most likely be found coming from your oil pan before anywhere else. The
oil pan acts as a reservoir and is molded into a deep section at the bottom of
the crankcase. Replacing your own oil pan can save you money on labor fees, but
it’s important to work carefully. One of the most common mistakes made while
installing a new oil pan is excessive tightening of the gaskets. Over tightening
the gaskets will crush them and push the oil pan and front cover inward around
the bolt holes. The result is a worse oil leak than the one you had in the first
place.
