An engine’s oil pan is the first place you’ll likely discover an oil leak. Because
the oil runs down the sides of the crankcase and gathers in the oil pan once you
shut your engine off, the oil is continuously tossed around in the pan and can
easily find its way out of a leak if there is one. Your Daihatsu oil pan is manufactured
from a thin piece of steel and is bolted to the bottom of the crankcase. It’s
molded in a deep section of the crankcase to optimize its function as an oil reservoir.
The oil pump and oil drain plug both use the oil pan as a host. If you are going
to replace your own oil pan, be careful to not over tighten the gaskets. Gaskets
that have been tightened too excessively will be ruined and you’ll end up with
an oil leak worse than the one you had before you began.
