The removable mechanism structured from a thin piece of steel that’s bolted to the bottom of your crankcase is your Buick oil pan.  It is molded into a deep section at the bottom of the crankcase to optimize its operation and serve as an oil reservoir.  The oil pump and oil drain plug both use the oil pan as a host.  Once you turn your engine off, oil flows down from the sides of the crankcase and collects in the oil pan.  The most likely place to find an oil leak is your oil pan because the oil it holds gets tossed around continuously and if there’s a leak, it will eventually find its way out.  If you’re planning to install your own oil pan, make sure you know exactly what to do before you begin.  Over tightening the bolts could push the oil pan and front cover inward around the bolt holes.  If this happens, the gaskets will be smashed.
