One of the first places most cars start leaking oil is from the oil pan. Your
BMW oil pan can be found bolted at the bottom of your crankcase. It operates
as an oil reservoir for your vehicle. The oil pan is detachable and is manufactured
from a thin piece of metal. To maximize its function, the oil pan is molded into
a deeper section underneath your crankcase. The oil pan assists the oil pump
and drain plug. The oil that flows down from the sides of the crankcase is caught
by the oil pan once the engine has been turned off. Since the oil in the oil
pan sloshes around, if you have a leak, the oil will find its way out from the
oil pan first. Installing your own oil pan can save you a lot of money, but you
have to know what you’re doing. If you over tighten the bolts while you install
your oil pan, the pan and front cover will be pushed inward around the bolts and
you will have a worse oil leak than what you started with.
