Your Alfa Romeo oil pan is a mechanism that is mounted underneath the crankcase
to function as an oil reservoir. It is detachable and made out of a thin layer
of steel that’s bolted to the bottom of the crankcase. For optimized function,
the oil pan is molded into a deeper section. The oil pan also assists the oil
pump and oil drain plug. When you turn your engine off, the oil collects the
oil that’s flowing down from the sides of the crankcase. Many people experience
a leaky oil pan from time to time. This is a common problem because the oil pan
holds a lot of oil that’s swishing around and it will eventually find its way
to a leak if there is one. Because the oil in the oil pan is the first to leak
out, it’s very important that the new oil pan is installed correctly. Over tightening
the bolts into the oil pan and front cover can push everything around the bolt
holes inward. If everything gets pushed inward, the gaskets will be smashed and
unable to function effectively. Smashed gaskets will result in a more extreme
oil leak. If you’re installing your own oil pan, it’s also important to double
check and make sure that your gaskets aren’t being squeezed out from under the
oil pan.
