Every vehicle we have today is dependent on various vehicle fluids for their proper operation. For the vehicle to run, for example, it needs power that only the fuel can provide. Then, in order for its engine to work at its best, it must always be running at a specified standard operating temperature—a temperature that can only be maintained with the aid of the coolant. Lastly, the various engine parts can only function smoothly if they are lubricated properly. And for this lubrication, lubricant oil pumped into the various engine parts would be a necessity.
But while various vehicle parts cannot function properly without these various vehicle fluids, these fluids can neither service the vehicle efficiently if there is no component that would store them. Thus, every vehicle must be equipped with a fuel tank to store the vehicle's fuel. Vehicles must also be equipped with coolant tanks for coolant storage. And if you are following, you should be thinking that vehicles must be equipped with oil tanks for lubricant oil storage. But vehicles don’t have oil tanks. Instead, lubricant oil pools in the oil pan before they are pumped into the various engine parts.
So what is an oil pan? An oil pan is a removable, metal chamber or bowl that is bolted on the bottom of the engine's crankcase. This component is usually made of thin sheet steel or cast alloy, although there are also high-performance oil pans that are made from billet aluminum. After the oil circulates throughout the engine to lubricate and cool the engine's moving parts, it drains down towards the oil pan to be stored. Because of this very basic function, most oil pans are but empty containers with an oil drain plug which can be removed to allow old oil to drain out of the vehicle during an oil change. Some high performance oil pans, however, are a bit more complicated; featuring baffles and trap doors that can control the movement of the oil and keep it closer to the oil pump during aggressive driving.
An oil pan may be a very simple auto component with a very simple function. Nevertheless, it is vital for the proper operation of your vehicle's engine parts. So if your vehicle's oil pan is already damaged or heavily corroded, you better give it an immediate repair, unless you want it to leak too much oil. If just about every repair job can't solve the problem, you better replace your vehicle's stock oil pan completely. Here at Parts Train, we have a lot of high quality replacement oil pans that you can make use of whenever you find a need to.
