There are two hoses connected to the oil filter. One hose is the inlet hose while the other hose is the outlet hose. Oil is pumped by an oil pump. This oil pump is a simple centrifugal pump that sucks oil by creating partial vacuum. Oil is channeled from the oil reservoir to the oil filter. Before oil flows to the engine block, impurities are removed first by the oil filter.

As the oil circulates the engine block, it takes away any residues left by combustion. The residues are channeled back to the oil reservoir. Dirt accumulation takes time. Hence, the oil in the reservoir can be reused several times without the need for oil change. The oil filter is one of the most important components that maintain engine efficiency.
