Changing lane, freeway merging or front-to-rear pileups causes many accidents. With the increased popularity of trucks, SUVs and mini-vans and the use of those vehicles for towing, the signal from a side mirror may be the only indication drivers a few car lengths back have of the intentions of the vehicle ahead.
