Some are the mass airflow sensor, oxygen sensor, throttle position sensor, coolant temperature sensor, voltage sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensor, engine speed sensor, and the knock sensor. All these sensors which are injected in the engine fall under the engine’s safety and prevention system to attain its peak performance.
Unlike the rest of the sensors that work before and during the engine’s four-stroke cycle, the knock sensor starts its duty after the cycle. The Pontiac knock sensor actually sends to the engine computer the result of the compression stroke. Its main function is to sense vibrations and knocks in the cylinder head due to the inaccurate air and fuel mixture. This result is determined after the second cycle, which is the compression stroke in the engine, and then a signal is sent to the engine computer for action.
This device is located at the right side of the engine block, about halfway between the pan and the head, toward the front of the motor. When knocking is found in the engine cylinder, the computer will have to retard the timing in the compression until the signal is back to its reference level. The knock sensor is a performance device that needs to be maintained for it to give accurate report to the engine computer. Any irregularity in its structure, especially in its two ceramic rods, will greatly affect its function and it may need to be changed the soonest.
