Jeep Knock Sensor

The Jeep knock sensor plays a critical role in boosting your engine's performance and longevity. It is the device that is specifically designed to monitor engine operations by optimizing its performance and protect it against power-robbing and potentially destructive engine knock. Ideally, in order for the engine to start its combustion process, the ignition must be able to produce a perfectly timed spark. The spark must occur precisely as the piston reaches top dead center (TDC). The spark must travel across the combustion chamber to completely burn the fuel/air mixture just in time as the piston returns back down into the cylinders. Since the fuel/air mixture takes longer to burn, the need for an advanced timing is required. This greatly allows the engine to produce more power, increased fuel mileage, and improved emissions. But unfortunately, with the attempt to gain more power, too much advance triggers a knock in the engine. This causes vibrations and disturbances in proper engine operations, resulting to a decline in performance. For this reason, the Jeep knock sensor is implemented to monitor possible knock in the engine.

Knock is the result of an uneven fuel/air burning or is ignited ahead of time. This can be attributed by the "hot spots" in the cylinder which may be caused from carbon deposits or spark plugs that are extremely hot for the engine, or in some cases, high combustion chamber temperatures. These "hot spots" ignite the fuel/air mixture prematurely before the spark plug fires. This leads to two flame fronts occurring at the same time, one from the hot spot and the other from the spark plug. These fronts collide violently at each other as the burning gases expand, and thus a knock is triggered.

With the use of the Jeep knock sensor, a knock in the engine is efficiently detected. This sensor transmits signals to the engine-control computer if detonation is sensed, allowing a temporary retardation of the ignition timing until detonation ceases. It consists of an electric coil, wired rigidly around two ceramic rods with a magnet at the center. Any vibration in the engine will cause these rods to vibrate also. This distracts the electric coil's magnetic field and changes the current passing through the coil. This effect is picked up by the knock sensor and sends as a signal pattern to the computer, where it is analyzed. The computer will then determine the cause of vibration, either from a normal vibration or an engine knock.
