Your Dodge vehicle is comprised of various parts and some of them may be unknown to you. Good thing there are car components whose name suggests their functions. Consider your Dodge knock sensor; its name reveals already what it is for. Hence, there is no way for you to be ignorant of its use and function. The knock sensor is capable of detecting knocks which occur within a specific range of frequency. When there is a presence of engine knocks, the knock sensor sends a voltage signal to the Electronic Control Module (ECM). The knock sensor is purposively located at the engine block, cylinder head or intake manifold and is tuned to identify the frequency.

The Dodge knock sensor contains piezoelectric element which generates voltage when pressure or a vibration is applied. The knock sensor senses the fuel that burns unevenly and causes irregular vibrations within the engine. The electric coil that is wound around two ceramic rods equipped with a magnet in the center is also contained in the knock sensor. The engine vibration that creates disturbance to the coils magnetic field and alters the current passing through the coil will make the ceramic rods vibrate. The disturbance in the form of a signal pattern then returns to the computer. Now, the computer determines whether the vibrations are suggestive of engine knocking.

You may be wondering what causes the engine knocking. Basically, an engine block is caused by using low octane gas, which is not recommended by the car manufacturer. The other probable causes are too advanced ignition timing and "hot spot" in the combustion chamber. The carbon accumulated in the combustion chamber can glow red during high engine load and causes the air fuel to ignite prematurely which is not good in the system.

As the heart of the engine management system, your Dodge knock sensor, when well maintained can give you outstanding effects. This helps your vehicle obtain the ideal combination of fuel/air mixture and timing to further improve the produced power and efficiency. As an overall outcome, there is only little amount of wasted gas which is favorable to your budget. It's all about saving heaps of money!

So never let your knock sensors fail or suffer deterioration. Running your vehicle with faulty knock sensor will deprive you of good performance and fuel economy. Worse, this can even lead to more serious malfunctions within the system. It is a good thing that you have reached us.
