The Chevrolet Camaro knock sensor is designed to play two roles in your engine. Just like any other sensor employed in your auto, the knock sensor assesses engine operation to help achieve optimal engine performance. Another function of the knock sensor is to protect the engine from experiencing a so-called engine knock which is found to cause massive loss in horsepower and damages in engine components. To attain optimum performance, what your engine needs is that the spark happens at a time when the piston is positioned at the top dead center. This way, the spark passing through the combustion chamber will burn the air and fuel mixture completely once the piston settles at the bottom of the cylinder.
Unfortunately, most often than not, this s not achieved since the air and fuel mixture takes some time before it is fully burnt. Approximately a fraction of second delay should be compensated for, which is why there is a need to advance the timing. The advanced timing, when coupled with ideal chamber design, can achieve optimal engine performance and help generate more horsepower, achieve high fuel economy and significantly reduce the toxic emissions. An interesting fact is that more horsepower can be generated by the engine if the spark timing is further advanced. The consequence of doing so is an engine knock.
An engine knock can significantly reduce engine performance and can cause serious damages to the engine. It is called a knock since it creates vibrations and banging noises in the cylinder. When no knocking is sensed by the knock sensor, a basic or reference signal is sent to the onboard computer. But once the Chevrolet Camaro knock sensor detects a knock in the engine, the increase in movement or the vibration can cause a significant increase in the signal being sent to the computer. As a response, the computer makes the necessary adjustments to slow the timing until such time that the signal sent by the knock sensor to the computer returns to the reference signal.
If you value your vehicle’s internal combustion engine, you should not put off putting a reliable Chevrolet Camaro knock sensor. Don’t blame your vehicle if it gives you poor performance because only you can help your vehicle achieve utmost performance.
