Volvo Intake Manifold

There are basically two substances that must be fed to your Volvo’s engine for it to deliver the power that is needed by the vehicle to run. The first of these two substances is fuel, often referred to as the lifeblood of the vehicle because vehicles simply cannot run without them. Fuel alone, however, is not enough to enable the engine to produce the power much needed by the vehicle. For the fuel in the engine to burn, it must first be mixed with air. And supplying this air to your Volvo engine is the Volvo intake manifold.

The intake manifold is a system of tubes that run from the air/fuel mixture source to the individual intake ports on the engine cylinders. For vintage vehicle models, the intake manifold is usually located between the carburetor and the cylinder head. Late model Volvo vehicles, on the other hand, have the intake manifold located between the throttle body and the cylinder head. Still, on multipoint injected engines, the intake manifold holds the fuel injectors.

But no matter what the configuration of your Volvo’s air intake system is, the fuel and air mixture would flow through the intake manifold following the same path. From the air/fuel mixture source, the mixture would travel into a chamber called plenum, which in turn would feed the mixture to individual tubes called intake runners. From the intake runners, the mixture would be delivered into the intake ports of the individual cylinders.

There are many types of manifold, with each type designed to fit in a particular engine configuration. Even for your Volvo, the Volvo intake manifold configuration would often differ from one engine type to another. All of these manifolds, however, may be split in two general types. One type of intake manifold feeds half of cylinders separately while the other type feeds all cylinders all together. The first type is specifically used for low RPM applications while the second works better at high RPMs.

Since there are many types of intake manifold, you better make sure that you are purchasing the right one, or the type that will match that of your existing Volvo intake manifold, each time you have to replace the original equipment. Should you purchase yours from a nearby auto parts supplier, better bring with you the stock manifold so that you can verify if you purchased the right type.
