One of the biggest auto body parts in your vehicle is the one located in the front end of your car. It is called the hood and it is considered both a door and an opening body panel. It is both an entry point to access your engine compartment and serves to cover and protect it as well. The accessibility to the engine bay allows you to immediately repair your engine in cases of failure. It also gives you easy access for maintenance and repair; you can check it regularly to make sure everything is working perfectly okay.
The hood is considered a door because it has an inner panel and outer panel like what the door has, not just a sheet of metal. The inner panel has an underside that has bracings that crisscross to make it stronger and a sound absorbing material which can mask the noise of the engine that’s working under it. The outer panel serves as a cover to protect the engine and other engine components from elements that can cause it any damage. Hoods are usually made of steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber but fiber glass is now also being used as material. Hoods made from carbon fiber are lightweight and designed primarily for extreme driving.
There are also different designs for hoods. Normally, for a sedan, coupe hatch and station wagon, the hood is basically a flat sheet of metal that contours to the shape of the car. Performance cars like sports, trucks and SUVs have hoods that are equipped with special accessories like openings that allow the engine to inhale and exhale easier. These openings called hood scoops are used to channel the air directly towards the air filter which helps in the performance and efficiency improvement of the vehicle. If the opening faces towards the nose of the vehicle it is to draw in the cooler outside air, meaning more oxygen would be coming in for the internal combustion engine and thus improving the performance of your engine. Some openings are designed to release the hot air under the hood when the openings are facing towards the windshield. Some are designed with ornaments, power bulge or wiper jets which not only are ornamental but it can also help the engine to inhale and exhale easier like the hood scoops.
