Lexus IS300 Headlight

Automobile headlights such as the Lexus IS300 headlights are the main lights of an automobile. These lights allow the driver to maneuver or steer the vehicle during low visibility situations such as nighttime and foggy days. The headlights emit powerful light beams that are able to illuminate the road at greater range, allowing the driver to evade any obstacles on the road. Headlights are the main source of road illumination for the driver when there are no other sufficient light sources. As the name implies, headlights are located in front of the vehicle. Headlights are always installed as pairs of lamp assemblies, one lamp assembly for the left side and one lamp assembly for the right side.

Each headlight lamp assembly is comprised of two halogen lamps, a parabolic reflector, a lens cover, and housing. The halogen lamp is a powerful lamp that emits high intensity light. As the name implies, a halogen lamp contains an inert or halogen gas inside. The molecules of the halogen gas are excited by the electrical charge and heat of the lamp filament. As a result, the molecules release photons and other forms of energy. Hence, the light intensity emitted by the halogen lamp is comparatively greater than the light intensity of ordinary incandescent lamps. Each headlight assembly has a pair of halogen lamps that correspond to high beam and low beam mode.

Light rays from the lamps are focused into high intensity beams by the parabolic reflector and by the lens. A headlight lens is actually a bi-focal lens. The central lens is a convex lens that focuses light while the side lens is a scatter lens that spreads the light into wider area, allowing a wider angle of illumination for the headlight. The parabolic reflector, on the other hand, focuses light rays into a powerful beam by reflecting the light rays from the halogen lamp into narrow path. Other headlight assemblies feature shifting parabolic mirrors instead of dual lamps for the high beam and low beam modes of the headlight. The parabolic mirrors can be shifted so that the focus can also be controlled.

High beam mode is used when the automobile is running at fast speed, typically on a highway. The high beam mode has greater range of illumination, lighting the path of the vehicle a few meters ahead. This mode allows the driver to immediately see ahead of the vehicle, evading obstacles and efficiently maneuvering the vehicle. On the other hand, the low beam mode is used when the vehicle is driving at a slower speed, typically in urban settings. Low beam mode projects lower intensity of light at shorter range, almost just immediately ahead of the vehicle. This mode prevents other motorists and pedestrians to be dazzled by the light.
