The head gasket sits between the engine block and the cylinder head in an internal combustion engine. It is because the primary function of the head gasket is to seal the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and avoid leakage of coolant or engine oil into the cylinders. A superior quality head gasket should be able to make certain that from installation until there is engine life it is able to contain the coolant and oil and maintained a leak-free performance. This task is the one thing that makes the head gasket one, if not the most, critical and crucial gaskets in your engine.

The aluminum cylinder on cast iron block makes engines harder to seal. The aluminum may weigh less but heat can cause them to expand very fast (they expand 1.7 times faster than cast iron) and ruining the ability of the head gasket to seal properly. In order to prevent the gaskets from sticking to either surface and allowing the head to expand and contract without tearing the gasket apart, materials like molybdenum, Teflon and others has been used. For cast iron engine, raised silicon or fluoropolymer elastomer sealing beads are applied to the gasket which increases the clamping pressure and improving the sealing ability of the gasket.

A lot worse can happen if your head gasket blows from compression loss to exhaust gases being forced to the cooling system which can lead to the overheating of the engine and increased engine wear because the corruption of the antifreeze with the motor oil. Essentially, a blown head gasket may cause extensive engine damage due to overheating or loss of lubrication. But, you do not have to wait for your head gasket to get blown rather your head gasket condition can be investigated by checking the compression pressure with a pressure gauge and the pressure in the cooling system. That is because oil mixed with coolant and excessive coolant loss without reason is definite signs of head gasket problems.

Making sure that you have a good quality head gasket is important to the over all performance of your engine. The resilience of your head gasket can be made stronger by using tougher and high resistant fibers like Aramid and Kevlar in composite gaskets. It is important that blown head gaskets are replaced right away. For an exceptional Jeep Cherokee Head Gasket, simply browse the catalog at Parts Train.
