Jeep Head Gasket

You may think its nothing but an ordinary seal of the combustion chambers, the coolant and oil passages but mind you, the purpose of your Jeep head gasket is not as simple as you think. The head gasket is one of the vital auto parts that ensure leak free operations. Leaks can pose much threat on the over-all safety of the car and the passengers. In fact it is one of the most common factors of explosion that has taken precious and innocent lives. It is mounted between the engine block and the cylinder head to serve as the absorber of the heat given off by the engine.

Aside from such basic purpose, the head gasket of your Jeep also serves as the path that directs the coolant between the head and the block. The engine generates too much heat due to the combustion of fuel and air mixture. To avoid overheating, a coolant flows from the car’s radiator down to the block until it reaches its destination area. Gaskets are crafted with holes for easier passage of the coolant. Sports cars and other sports utility vehicles are equipped with head gaskets made from very thin copper and steel which can pose negative threats to your health most especially if the fibers emit its killer substances.

Blown or leaking head gasket can negatively affect the efficient operation of the engine. It can be traced down to several causes which can involve the design, features or the process of installation. Problems in head gasket designs are usually faced by engines with aluminum cylinder heads which can produce too much movement because of its fast expansion capacity. The motion can lead to rubbing of the head and the block. Failure of the head gasket to withstand the movement can cause damages and leaks. This is the reason why the head gasket of your Jeep is made from tough surfaces to avoid faster tearing.

Some head gaskets come with nonstick coating made from Teflon, molybdenum and other low friction coating materials. This type is used fro bimetal engines. Cast iron engines on the other hand call for an opposite function. The thermal expansion of the block and head of cast iron engines is slower so the motion produced is not as active so there is a need for more clamping pressure. The gasket for this type serves as the cold seal for much better engine operation.
