As the cylinders of your engine fire, the power is being transmitted via the crankshaft. The crankshaft’s front portion usually suffers from the impact of the said power that’s why it frequently moves before the crankshaft’s rear. This results to a twisting motion. And then, as the power is taken out from the front, the shaft that’s twisted in the center unwinds and usually snaps back in reverse direction. Though the said unwinding process is small, it thus causes torsional vibration.
In order to prevent the said vibration, a harmonic balancer is installed to the crankshaft’s front portion which causes all the trouble. The harmonic balancer is composed of two pieces of rubber joined together by spring loaded friction discs, rubber plugs or even both. When the power coming from the cylinder strikes the front part of the crankshaft, it attempts to also twist the damper’s heavy portion. It, however, ends up twisting the discs or rubber that connects the two damper components. The front portion of the crankshaft isn’t capable of speeding because of the damper attached to it. Hence, the force is just consumed in twisting the rubber and speeding up the damper wheel. Through this, the operation of the crankshaft stays calm.
