The automotive Harmonic balancer, also known as vibration damper is a component that’s attached to the crankshaft in order to prevent or at least lessen the torsional vibration of the engine. The moment the cylinders fire, power is being transmitted via the crankshaft. The front portion of the crankshaft has to take the impact of the said power and because of this, it moves before the crankshaft’s rear. Hence, twisting motion is produced. As the power left the front part, the halfway twisted shaft then unwinds and snaps back in reverse direction. And even though the said unwinding process is small, it causes torsional vibration. A harmonic balancer is installed to the front part of the crankshaft in order to reduce this torsional vibration.
The vibration damper is made up of two components connected by spring loaded frictions discs, rubber plugs or both. When the power coming from the cylinder slaps the front portion of the crankshaft, it twists the heavy portion of the damper. However it ends up winding the discs or the rubber that connects the damper components. Due to the damper attached to it, the front of the crankshaft finds it hard to speed up and the force is just wasted in twisting the rubber and speeding up the damper wheels. Through this, the operation of the crankshaft stays calm.
