Vibration is an ever-present by-product of the engine’s function. When the internal combustion engine is on the roll for providing the needed power throughout the car’s system, it also releases a torsional vibration that can be quite unpleasant to the occupants. And aside from the discomfort to the passengers, the vibration or resonance can be harmful to the engine. The pressure does not simply end in the engine but also in the crankshaft. Damage to these parts can adversely affect the overall function of the vehicle.
The car manufacturers have developed a device that addresses this dilemma and they call it, harmonic balancer. Sometimes this device is also termed as crank pulley damper, torsional damper or vibration damper. This is situated in the crankshaft, specifically in the front section. The main role of this component is to lengthen the life of the engine through vibration reduction.
With regards to the physical structure, the harmonic balancer is composed of three parts – the inner, center and the outer portion. The inner portion is attached to the crankshaft while the center is made up of a rubber material in the shape of a ring that is responsible for reducing the vibrations that come from the internal combustion engine. The outer part has a weight ring that is typically made out of cast iron. Among these parts, the most that absorbs the vibrations is the rubber pack in between the inner and outer layer.
Because of the natural make-up of this device and the seriousness of its function, the harmonic balancer is not safe from damage. The vibrations alone can make it so worn out in so little period of time. And if you are lucky to have a balancer that has lasted a long time in its use, then the more that you should watch out for deterioration. Damage to this part can affect the overall performance of your vehicle and can pose risks like losing control while driving at a great speed.
Regular maintenance is a must for this aspect. If you are busy person and do not have the time to do the inspection yourself, then you can simply take it to a car shop and have a technician investigate. If it has been found out that the harmonic balance already has serious defects, don’t think twice about having them replaced. A superb vehicle like Daihatsu also deserves excellent replacement items like the ones that you can only find at Parts Train. But don’t take our word for it; try it to believe.
