Do the vibrations inside your Acura cause too much stress on you while driving? Well, you are not the only one affected by vibrations, and neither are you the only one who gets stressed out. Under the hood of your Acura, the crankshaft of your engine would also get stressed out by a vibration called torsional vibration. And if you would use sound deadeners to suppress panel vibrations, the crankshaft of your Acura is equipped with the Acura harmonic balancer to dampen torsional vibration.
First, let's define torsional vibration and why it happens. Torsional vibration is a type of vibration that occurs whenever a shaft twists around its axis. Under the hood of your Acura, this kind of vibration would normally emanate from the crankshaft of the engine. As the engine fires power, a large part of this power is transmitted to the front end of the crankshaft. This causes the front end of the shaft to turn first before the rear end does, resulting to a twisting motion. As power is removed, the front end would again tend to snap back in the opposite direction. This twisting and snapping back is the cause of torsional vibration.
To counter torsional vibration, Acura vehicles are equipped with high quality Acura harmonic balancers. Also called crank pulley dampers or vibration dampers, these components are normally made up of three parts: a steel inner part that attaches to the crankshaft; a steel outer part that has grooves for the belt; and a rubber disk or spring loaded discs, or both, in the middle. As the engine fires power, it would try to twist the front end of the shaft. With a harmonic balancer, however, it will end up twisting the rubber part of the damper. This allows the crankshaft to turn smoothly and prevent torsional vibration.
By preventing torsional vibration, the harmonic balancer can prevent too much damage on the crankshaft and on the engine as a whole. However, there is no way for the harmonic balancer to protect itself from damage. In time, the rubber part of the damper would eventually wear out and its steel parts would incur damages. If those things happen, you'll have no other recourse but a harmonic balancer replacement.
So, is the harmonic balancer of your Acura already damaged? Then you can never be too lucky because you're on the exact site where you can find a lot of high quality Acura parts—Parts Train!
