Vehicles are outfitted with a fuel system which stores and supplies fuel to the cylinder chamber, the component where it usually mixed with air, vaporized and burned in order to generate energy. The vehicle’s fuel, either diesel or gasoline, is stored in a fuel tank. From the tank, the fuel is drawn by the fuel pump through the fuel lines and it is transported via fuel filter to a fuel injector or a carburetor, and then carried to the cylinder chamber for the combustion process.

The fuel tank is typically made up of plastic or stamped steel and is maintained in its place by steel straps. It holds an electric fuel tank and a sending unit and at the same time gives a connection to the vapor collection or recovery parts of the vehicle’s emission system. It also features a filler neck, which is intended to confine fueling to unleaded fuel nozzles. The design and location of the tank always depend on the available space in the vehicle. Most vehicles come with a single tank placed in the rear part of the vehicle.

These days, fuel tanks possess internal baffles which prevent the fuel from sloshing back and forth. Moreover, all fuel tanks have to be vented. Before 1970 model year, fuel tanks were vented to the environment, giving off hydrocarbon emissions. During the ‘70s, all vehicle fuel tanks are vented via a charcoal canister, into the engine in order to be burned before it will be emitted to the atmosphere. Fuel tanks usually last for the life of the vehicle unless damaged by rust or collision.
