Your vehicle is a complex system with many components and parts working together to make it move. Each part has a special role to perform, though it may not be directly concerned with the auto’s performance, but still it performs function that cannot be disregarded. Even when a single part or of your car is missing or isn’t functioning, the entire vehicle won’t run in the same way as it was new. Take for example the fuel tank. You may not regard this as one of the most significant parts of your auto but it surely is necessary because it holds the fuel, which is your car’s lifeblood.

Most fuel tanks are made of metal but today there are also plastic fuel tanks being sold in the market. The fuel tank’s primary function is to store fuel that is later mixed with air for the combustion. Fuel is drawn to the fuel tank by the fuel pump and from there it goes to the combustion chamber of the engine through the steel lines and fuel lines. In the engine, the fuel is mixed and burned with air. The burned air-fuel mixture is ignited and the result of which is the force that propels the wheels of your vehicle. Usually, cars have only one fuel tank located at the rear end of the vehicle under the trunk compartment. There are some cars though that have engines at the rear end of the car, thus, the fuel tank is mounted on the front compartment.

The tank has inlet and outlet pipes, found at the bottom and at the top or side of the tank, respectively. Sediments are collected at the lower end of the tank, which is about one-half inch above the bottom of the tank so that it won’t go straight to the carburetor. Inside the tank, there are baffles that control the flow of fuel, preventing it from spilling back and forth the tank. From 1970, the law required that fuel tanks must be vented through charcoal canister into the engine to avoid hydrocarbon emissions. Also it was regulated that autos must be equipped with rollover protection devices that prevent fuel spills.
