The cooling system in your vehicle keeps your engine from overheating. Your
radiator fan is the center of the cooling system. Three components make up your
radiator fan: the fan motor, fan blade, and fan shroud. If any of these three
components wear down or break, your engine will overheat. The fan motor is the
part that powers the radiator fan. Your fan blades spin rapidly to create the
air flow necessary to keep the engine cool. You may have four fan blades on your
radiator fan or you could have up to eleven. Your Saab fan shroud is the hood
or covering that protects the fan blades and prevents air from flowing back through
the fan. Made from a thick, durable plastic, the fan shroud helps to concentrate
the air. Even the smallest fracture in the fan shroud will keep it from working
properly. The fan shroud must be replaced as soon as the crack is discovered.
