Does the engine of your Lexus overheat a lot? If so, there must be something wrong with one or more of its engine cooling system components. In such cases, many of us would find it easy to put the blame on the radiator. After all, the component makes up the core of the engine cooling system. But the radiator can only do so much of its function if it gets an ample amount of cold air. And to get this cold air, the radiator would need the aid of the radiator fan. Thus, whenever the engine of your Lexus overheats, there is much reason for you to suspect cooling fan damage as much as you would suspect radiator damage.
But what particular cooling fan damage can cause the engine to overheat? Actually, any damage in the Lexus radiator fan can affect its air pulling or pushing capacity, weakening its capability to help the radiator cool the engine coolant. Eventually, such damages would cause the engine to overheat. Greater effects, however, is brought by a damage in the component that controls the movement of the fan blades. If your Lexus is equipped with a mechanical fan, this control mechanism is the fan clutch. But if your Lexus is equipped with an electric radiator fan, this primary force is the Lexus fan motor.
The Lexus fan motor is a small, direct current motor responsible for driving the electric radiator fan. The fan motor is electrically operated, so it does not rely on the power generated by the engine. And since the fan motor is not engine dependent, it can drive the fan even if the engine is already switched off, thus allowing for engine aftercooling. On the negative side, however, a cooling fan powered by a fan motor may start up unexpectedly while you are inspecting the engine area of your Lexus, which may result to accidents and injuries.
Being the primary component that powers the electric cooling fan of your Lexus, any damage in the Lexus fan motor, or its complete failure, can cause the engine fan to stop moving. If this happens, the radiator won't be able to draw help from the cooling fan in cooling the engine, thus weakening its cooling power and causing the engine to overheat.
