If you’ve noticed that your engine has been overheating recently, you should check the condition of your fan clutch.  The Subaru fan clutch is an essential part of your engine and it is responsible for rotating the fan at the precise speed needed to keep the engine cool.  You don’t need a repair man to find out if you need a new fan clutch.  Do it by yourself by first checking the fan clutch for oil streaks of any kind.  Fresh or dust ridden oil streaks are a sure sign that the internal fluid that supplies clutch action is leaking.  Even if this is not the problem, the fan clutch may still be the culprit.  Check to see if the bearing on your fan clutch is worn when the engine is off.  Grab the fan blade with your hand and try to wiggle it from side to side.  If you’ve got more than 1/4” of movement, your bearing is worn and the fan clutch should be replaced.
