Saturn Radiator Fan Clutch |
The purpose of the cooling fan in your Saturn vehicle is to circulate air through the radiator to make it more capable of releasing engine heat into the surrounding air. This component was made more efficient with the introduction of fan clutches. Through Saturn fan clutches, the cooling fan installed in your Saturn automobile operates only when they are needed.
Just like other fan clutches, Saturn fan clutch is a small fluid coupling featuring a thermostatic device and designed to control a variable-speed fan. It makes sure that the cooling fan will spin at the proper speed to help keep the engine from overheating as well as to reduce drive to the fan when it isn’t needed. This small fluid partly contains silicone oil that’s intended for the said purpose. When the temperature of the air that passes through the radiator goes up, the heat commands a bimetal coil spring to expand or “uncoil”. And the moment it expands, it allows a little more oil to get in the fluid coupling, and makes it able to start spinning the fan. If the opposite happens, or if the air that enters the radiator is cool, the coil spring contracts and so, the oil leaves the coupling, causing the fan to slow.
Making the fan operation slow when it isn’t needed by the vehicle significantly reduces fuel consumption. It thus creates less noise and helps save engine power. Instead of a coil spring, a bimetal strip spring is used in some vehicles. This bimetal strip bows in and out when the air temperature drops and rises, allowing oil to come in and out of the fluid coupling.
For maximum cooling fan efficiency, make sure that your Saturn fan clutch is always in perfect condition. When you found out that it becomes defective, get a replacement unit right away.
