If the opposite happens, or if the air that enters the radiator is cool, the coil spring contracts and so, the oil leaves the coupling, causing the fan to slow.
Making the fan operation slow when it isn’t needed by the vehicle significantly reduces fuel consumption. It thus creates less noise and helps save engine power. Instead of a coil spring, a bimetal strip spring is used in some vehicles. This bimetal strip bows in and out when the air temperature drops and rises, allowing oil to come in and out of the fluid coupling.
