Hyundai Radiator Fan Clutch |
When your Hyundai overheats, what component would you usually blame? It is the radiator, right? After all, the radiator is indeed the primary and most important component of the Hyundai engine cooling system. Not all engine overheating problems, however, is caused by a faulty regulator. Among other components, the radiator would depend on the automotive fan to cool the engine efficiently. So should the fan get damaged, the radiator won't be able to cool the engine properly.
If your Hyundai makes use of a clutch fan, one of the many damages that the Hyundai automotive fan may incur is fan clutch leakage. The Hyundai fan clutch is a viscous (fluid) device that is connected to the center of your Hyundai's variable speed engine fan. The primary function of the fan clutch is to regulate the speed of the fan. If the temperature of the engine rises, the clutch would force the fan to spin faster. And by slightly disengaging the fan, the clutch forces the fan blades to rotate slower as the engine temperature begins to go down.
But how can the Hyundai fan clutch have a leakage problem? As a viscous device, the fan clutch makes use of a certain type of fluid to control fan speeds. In most cases, the fluid used is silicone oil. The speed of the fan actually depends on the torque-carrying capacity of the silicone oil. So the more silicone oil there is in the coupling device, the greater the fan speed would be.
Two types of fan clutches are used on most vehicles today. One type of fan clutch regulates the amount of silicone oil in the coupling with the use of a bimetallic strip and a control piston. The second type, on the other hand, would make use of a heat-sensitive, bi-metal spring connected to an opening plate. In either type, the bi-metal element of the fan clutch would react with a change in temperature, allowing more silicone oil to enter the coupling whenever the temperature rises and thus regulating fan speed.
So the next time that the engine of your Hyundai overheats, don't blame the radiator all too quickly. Who knows, a fan clutch leakage may be the real cause of the problem. In this case, you would need a replacement Hyundai fan clutch; and for this need, you've got Parts Train.
