When there is too much heat, the bimetal coil spring expands and allows the oil to go into the fluid coupling to activate the fan. On the other hand, if the air is too cool, the coil springs contracts and the oil is not allowed to enter the coupling causing the fan to slow down. It is essential that the fan slows down when not in use to save the power of the engine. This function of the fan clutch efficiently reduces the risk of your engine from overheating, thus allowing you to enjoy your ride for thousands of miles.

Time and usage will, however, cause the fan clutch to wear out. Dirt, heat, rust and other contaminants will deteriorate the fan clutch and cause it to malfunction. When this happens you will start to experience overheating. Overheating is very hazardous as the fuel in the engine will start to detonate. The engine will also lose its power and waste fuel. Pre-ignition can also occur damaging and burning the pistons and other engine parts. The head gasket can also be blown out resulting to stress that can restrict the coolant flow to the cylinders.
