This car component is a mushroom-shaped device that can be seen mounted between the engine and the fan. Depending on the temperature inside your engine bay, your Acura RL fan clutch enables the engine fan to either drive or freewheel it. It does this through a silicone fluid that thins when it is cool and thickens when it gets hot.

A thermostatic spring is responsible for the regulation of your Acura RL fan clutch operation. The clutch disengages whenever the engine is cold, so the engine fan runs at its slowest speed. On the other hand, the clutch engages when the engine is hot. When this happens, the fan clutch runs at its fastest (although much slower than the internal combustion engine). This operation is possible because of a viscous silicone fluid that can be seen in between the clutch assembly’s chambers.
