Fuel combustion produces several gases like hydrocarbons or the unburned fuel,
carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, phosphorus lead
and other metals that once reached the atmosphere could be very harmful or even
fatal. And as a process of burning fuel, the engine through its combustion also
creates noise. This is the reason why every Chevrolet vehicle is equipped with
exhaust system. This exhaust system functions as silencer at the same time a system
that cleans these exhaust gasses and converts it in to a lesser harmful and cleaner
air. The exhaust system is basically a series of pipes and tubes located underneath
the vehicle that is connected from the engine and ends at the tail pipe when it
releases the air to the atmosphere.
The exhaust system starts from exhaust manifold which connects the whole system
to the engine of the vehicle. Is made from cast or nodular iron which gathers
the exhaust gases to manage and direct the flow in to one direction, which is
to the tail pipe. The exhaust manifold is designed depending on the type of the
engine employed in the vehicle and the number of cylinders the engine has and
the design depends on how many cylinders are present.
After the exhaust is gathered from the fuel combustion, it is directed to the
catalytic converter. The catalytic converter, as the name implies, converts the
exhaust gasses into a lesser harmful gas. When this process is done, the air goes
to the resonator. The resonator, also known as the mini muffler reduces the sound
of the exhaust. It is either located at before or after the muffler which functions
the same as the resonator. All modern injected cars have an oxygen sensor to measure
how much oxygen is present in the exhaust. The sensor is commonly located in the
exhaust manifold or close to it in the exhaust pipe. The last part of the system
is the tail pipe which is also the only visible part of the system. The whole
system constitutes a very vital part of the vehicle.
