Oldsmobile was one of the oldest automobile brands in the world and it was the oldest American automobile brand. Nonetheless, the name Oldsmobile is not an adjective describing its age. Rather, the name Oldsmobile was derived fro the name of its founder, Ransom E. Olds. The company that manufactured this brand was founded in 1897 and only stopped producing cars in the United States in 2004. It has first existed as an independent car manufacturer, but was later absorbed by the General Motors. In its 107 years of existence in the United States, Oldsmobile had produced 35.2 million cars. Oldsmobile was a pioneer o0n many innovations on the car. It brags an extensive list of “first.” Oldsmobile was the first car that featured speedometer in 1901. While in 1926, it was the first to implement chrome plating in the radiator and other parts of the car. In 1929, Oldsmobile pioneered the first mono block V8 on its Viking model. Automatic choke was introduced by Oldsmobile in 1932. Oldsmobile was also the first automobile brand that used automatic transmission in 1940. Oldsmobile exhaust was also pioneering in many aspects.
Oldsmobile exhaust system was the first to introduce the exhaust gas-driven compressor turbocharger in 1962-1963 in its F-85 coupes and convertibles. The aluminum block 215 cubic-inch V8 engine with the turbocharger produced one horsepower per cubic inch. The turbocharger of the Oldsmobile increased the amount of oxygen by compressing the air that enters the combustion chambers, thereby increasing power. Oldsmobile turbocharger improved fuel efficiency by allowing the complete combustion of fuel. The turbocharger is powered by the exhaust gas in order to create a balance between the intake gas pressure and he exhaust gas pressure. The greater the exhaust gas pressure, the greater is the compression of intake gas to compensate for the extra need for oxygen.
Aside from the turbocharger which is largely used for race car applications, the basic components of Oldsmobile exhaust includes the exhaust manifold, which collects the exhaust gases from the combustion chambers; the exhaust pipes, which serve as passageway for exhaust gases; the catalytic converter, which chemically treats the exhaust gases to reduce pollution; the muffler, which reduces the noise by destructive interference of the explosive sound from the expanding exhaust gas; and, finally, the tailpipe which serves as the exit for the exhaust gases.
