Silencers may contain acidic moisture because of the pressure and temperature changes. The corrosive acid will precipitate in the silencer as it remains relatively cold. This will damage the silencer, which will later be manifested by an annoying noise. Nevertheless, noises are not just brought by bad silencer because some cracks on the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe are also possible to take place. Also, a leaking gasket may cause hissing sound while a chugging noise is a sign of blockage in the system.
