First, the piston goes down (intake stroke) to draw the air-fuel mixture into the combustion chamber through the open intake valve. The intake valve closes and the piston goes up (compression stroke), compressing the mixture inside the chamber. At this point, the spark plug is preparing to ignite the mixture. When ignition has already taken place, the piston again goes down (power stroke), turning the crankshaft that sends power to the wheels. Finally, the piston goes up again (exhaust stroke), pushing the exhaust gas off the vehicle.
