The internal combustion engine is probably the most significant part of your automotive because this is where the burning of the fuel occurs. When the fuel is burnt, power is delivered to all the rest of the vehicle parts making it run on the road. This is considered as the heart of the automotive as it is the one that generates the energy needed by the vehicle to achieve its purpose. To operate, the internal combustion engine needs fuel, electricity to ignite the fuel, oil for lubrication, and water to cool it off.

All of the mentioned needs must be in proper condition. However, the internal combustion engine will not start if it is not powered with an electric starter and a battery. In other words, the ignition system is where it all depends and a perfect timed spark is what comes first before everything else runs and moves inside the engine. The ignition system should be able to work in harmony with the rest of the engine systems. Its goal is to ignite the fuel in a very specific time creating and expansion of gases to avail maximum amount of work. A mistake on the timing then will end you up with power failure or super gas consumption and really bad emission.

With the job mentioned, the spark plug is the device fitted into the cylinder head found in the internal combustion engine that ignites the compressed aerosol gasoline with an electric spark. The spark plug is divided into parts too. It has the insulator, a shell and a conductor. These devices are made durable to withstand a long lifetime as it is also used to pierce the wall of the combustion chamber and must also seal the combustion chamber against high pressures or temperatures. Just like the rest of the parts, spark plugs have been undergoing modifications trying to achieve longer life or better ignition, or both. The changes have been included in a number of variations like ones that use two to four equally spaced electrodes that surrounds the center electrode and another variation uses a recessed center electrode surrounded by a sparkplug thread which also acts as the ground electrode.

The sizes of the spark plugs too vary, but its makes are as much as possible the same and only differs in electrodes.
