Everyone is concerned about automotive exhaust emissions because we all breathe the same air, not to mention the gas prices that never seem to stop increasing. One of the most important technologies that would reduce exhaust emissions and that would improve fuel economy that they have introduced is the oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor is part of the emissions control system and feeds data to the engine management computer. Its goal is to help the engine of your car run as efficiently as possible and also to produce as few emissions as possible.

So from 1980, oxygen sensors have been standard equipment on passenger car and light truck engines. Originally called a “Lambda Sensor” when it was first used in fuel injected European cars, the oxygen sensor monitors the level of oxygen in the exhaust so an onboard computer can regulate the air/fuel mixture to decrease or to reduce emissions. This auto contraption is mounted in the exhaust manifold downpipe facing the catalytic converter or between the exhaust manifolds and the catalytic converters. Sensors generate a voltage signal proportional to the amount of oxygen in the exhaust.

The oxygen sensor’s voltage signal is monitored by the onboard engine management computer to regulate the fuel mixture. When the said computer sees a rich signal from the sensor, it commands the fuel mixture to go lean and when it receives a lean signal from the oxygen sensor, it commands the fuel mixture to go rich. Cycling back and forth from rich to lean, this process averages out the overall air/fuel mixture to reduce emissions and to help the catalytic converter to operate excellently, which is crucial to reduce hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen levels even more. In addition, the speed with which the oxygen sensor reacts to oxygen changes in the exhaust is very essential for accurate fuel control, top fuel economy and low emissions.

As expected, oxygen sensors don’t last forever. The normal aging process will eventually cause the oxygen sensor to stop working. As it ages, contaminants from normal combustion and oil ash accumulate on the sensing element which reduces the sensor’s ability to respond quickly to changes in the air/fuel mixture. Not only that, the sensor’s output voltage might not be as high as it was before, giving the false impression that the air/fuel mixture is leaner than it actually is. The result can be a richer-than-normal air-fuel mixture in different operating conditions, resulting in much higher fuel consumption and emissions.
