For the engine to perform efficiently, it must be fed with just the right mixture of air and fuel. The primary function of the oxygen sensor is to measure the amount of oxygen remaining in the exhaust system. After determining this, the sensor feeds this data to the engine management computer, which in turn controls the fuel delivery system to release just the right amount of fuel. So if the oxygen sensors are working properly, the engine would perform efficiently.

But there is one problem with oxygen sensors: exhaust gases are the main cause of their deterioration. And because oxygen sensors are meant to be placed in the exhaust system, then there's no way for them to last long. This deterioration can further be aggravated by the use of leaded fuel. Now, in the absence of a functional oxygen sensor, the engine management computer would be left guessing as to how much fuel the engine actually needs, resulting to poor engine performance. Oxygen sensor damage is also a major cause of catalytic converter failure and a lot of other engine damages.

So if you don't care much about spending a lot of money for your Cadillac, why not allocate some of that money for taking care of the Cadillac oxygen sensors.
