An ignition wire set is an aftermarket product that can be purchased to replace the original ignition wires. Generally speaking, ignition wires refer to al the wires that are included in the ignition system. These wires are especially designed to carry high voltage electricity without overheating or melting. Ignition wires are highly conductive but have very low resistance to the flow of electrical current. Hence, they do not easily overheat or melt even when carrying very high voltage of electricity. Ignition wires are also insulated by several layers of insulators to prevent short circuit and electrocution. There are typically three layers of insulations comprising of fiber glass or ceramic, asbestos and silicone rubber.

Multiple layers of insulations are needed not only to contain the high voltage electricity but also to prevent the emission of radio frequency waves. Radio wave frequency emanating from the ignition wires ca wreck havoc on the electronic components of the automobile. The ECM or on board computer, controlling engine functions such as fuel injection and air intake, is particularly susceptible to radio frequency waves. Timing and sequence may be interrupted or become interrupted.

Radio frequency waves can be induced by the high voltage electricity. Magnetic fields and electric fields are created around the ignition wires because of the flow of high voltage electricity. The high voltage electricity causes he atoms of the wires to be oriented in a single direction, thereby consolidating their respective magnetic and electrical fields. The electrical fields and magnetic fields are always parallel with each other. It is when these fields oscillate that radio frequency waves are induced. However, the radio waves created by this electromagnetic induction are very weak that these waves can easily be insulated by the multiple insulation layers of the ignition wires.

As the ignition key is turned, high voltage electricity flows from the automobile batteries into two different paths. Initially, the voltage is weak. However, it undergoes amplification in the ignition coil. The ignition coil is actually a simple step up transformer that increases the voltage of the current coming from the batteries. This electricity is directed to the starter motor and to the sparkplugs. The starter motor provides the initial nudge for the crankshaft to rotate. On the other hand, the sparkplugs are the ones that ignite and sustain fuel combustion. However, before the high voltage current reaches the sparkplugs, the current first passes through the distributor. The distributor regulates the timing and sequence of electrical distribution.
