An ignition wire set such as the GMC ignition wire set refers to the complete set of wires that connects certain components of ignition system to each other. Generally speaking the ignition wire set includes all wires that are part of the ignition system. On the other hand, a more strict definition of ignition wire set refers only to the sparkplug wires. However, the sparkplug wires are very similar to other wires of the ignition system. A typical ignition wire is a highly conductive wire that is covered with various layers of insulations. Typically the first layer of insulation is a fiber layer of asbestos or other heat resistant materials. The second layer is comprised of bits of ceramics. Finally, the third layer is a layer of rubber silicone.
These layers are designed not only to prevent electrocution or overheating due to the high voltage of electricity. The wires are also insulated to prevent radio frequency wave interference. Radio frequency wave interference can drastically affect the electronic components of the automobile such as the onboard computer and electronic sensors. Radio wave is produced by the oscillating high voltage electricity and electromagnetic fields. High voltage electricity produces a magnetic field. This magnetic filed is perpendicular to the electrical field. When these two fields oscillate, radio wave is produced. The oscillation is the direct result of the rapid on/off distribution of high voltage electricity.
Each ignition wire connects a sparkplug to the distributor. The distributor is a special type of rotary switch that sequentially but and alternately distributes high voltage electricity. The ignition wires are connected to the plugs of the distributor cap. Inside the distributor cap are carbon conductors that correspond to individual sparkplugs. A rotor is rotates inside the distributor to sequentially distribute the high voltage electricity. A pair of electrical brushes is connected to the distributor rotor. These brushes barely touch the carbon conductors, but the high voltage electricity jumps between the gaps of the carbon conductors and rotor brushes.
Although the batteries that supply current to the sparkplugs are of low voltage, the electrical voltage is amplified several times by the ignition coil. The ignition coil is a simple type of step-up transformer. The electrical voltage that is discharged in the sparkplugs can reach as high as 20,000 volts. If the wires used in the ignition system are ordinary wires, the wires can easily melt due to the extreme heat that can be produced by the high electrical voltage. If you are looking for high quality and reliable ignition wire set, you have come to the right place. Parts Train offers a wide array of ignition wire sets for different types of applications.
