Driving in comfort does not only involve excellent handling or superb suspension system, it also involves reliable internal climate control. An internal climate control enables you to maintain a comfortable level of temperature regardless of the weather conditions outside your vehicle. The internal climate control is actually a composite of two complementary but opposite systems. On system lowers the temperature while the other system warms the temperature inside the living compartment of the vehicle. Depending on the situation, you can alternately switch either of the two systems. When the weather is too hot and humid, it is the role of the air condition unit to lower the temperature. On the other hand if it is too cold outside, you should turn on the heater of your vehicle.

If the functional component of the air condition unit is the compressor, the functional unit of the automobile heater is the heater core. It is comparatively much simpler and cost-effective than the automobile air condition unit. The heater core directly derives its thermal energy from the excess thermal energy of the engine. It does not need a sophisticated compressor like the automobile air condition unit does. It consumes very little energy. It simply radiates some amount of thermal energy from the engine to warm the air inside the vehicle.

An electric fan blows air on the heater core to allow the circulation of warm air. The integrated heater core and blower can be found inside the dashboard of the vehicle. You simply flip a switch to operate the heater. When the blower is turned-off, there is also no coolant flowing in the heater core. The heater core operates by allowing the circulation of heated coolant from the engine block. The coolant is driven by a water pump. The water pump is powered by an electric motor that operates in synchrony with the air blower. They share the same switch. Hence, the coolant automatically stops from circulating when the air blower is turned off.

A heater core is very much similar to the main radiator of the vehicle. However, the heater core is not part of the cooling system of the vehicle, although it also circulates coolant fluid from the engine block. Its main purpose is not to cool down the engine but to derive heat from the engine to be utilized in heating the interior of the vehicle. Heater cores also have fans blowing air on its surface. But rather than simply dissipating the heat, the blower allows the circulation of warm air inside the vehicle to maintain a comfortable level of temperature.
