We usually wouldn't care about our vehicle's heating system during summers. As winter approaches, however, all of us would wish that our vehicle's heater is still working properly. It is during this time of the year when we appreciate the warmth given by the heater more than the cool air provided by the auto air conditioning system. But do you know that the heating system of your auto also works during summers? And do you know that the heating system is actually but a small part of a larger system whose function seems to oppose that of its own?

Well, you must have already heard the advice that when your car's engine overheats, you must run the heater with the fan at full blast while all the windows are open. The reason behind this is that the heating system can act as a secondary cooling system for your vehicle. In fact, the heating system is but a part of the engine cooling system. And the heating system's most important part—the heater core—is actually a small radiator that aids the primary radiator in cooling the coolant.

Basically, the heater core is a finned, water-to-air heat exchanger that can be found underneath the right side of your vehicle's dashboard, usually covered by a heater box. The primary function of the heater core, being a part of the vehicle heating system, is to provide heat to the passenger compartment air stream. This function, however, is but a result of its coolant cooling function. Coolant enters the heater core through a hose from the vehicle's cylinder head. With the aid of a fan, the heat absorbed by the coolant is transferred to the air flowing through the heater core. Partially cooled, the coolant then flows back to the pump.

Responsible not only for keeping the passenger compartment warm during the winter but also for aiding the radiator in cooling the engine all year long, the heater core is one important vehicle component that shouldn't be ignored. Failure to take proper care of the heater core may cause, among other things, coolant leaks. And should this happen, the efficiency of your vehicle's cooling system would surely be affected.

So if the heater core of your vehicle is still working properly, better give it enough care and attention. Heater core repairs are usually costly and replacement units are not that affordable either. But if, for any reason, the heater core of your vehicle gets severely damaged, be always assured that you can find a high quality and high performance replacement heater core here at Parts Train.
