Simply put, a cars engine works by burning fuel to produce energy to make the car run. Different car manufacturers use different ways in doing this with their own distinct technologies. All of them though produces byproducts such as exhaust gases that needs to de discarded from the engine as to not choke it. Some of the components that is included in the Saturn exhaust system are the exhaust manifold, It is usually made out of cast-iron; it is attached to the side of an engine's cylinder head. Bigger engines will feature one exhaust manifold on each side. The exhaust manifold directs gases from each of the exhaust ports on the cylinder head into a single pipe that leads to a catalytic converter for detoxifying. Some are fashioned to go above the rear axle, permitting the rear axle to move up and down without striking into the exhaust pipe; some are twisted to bend around under the floor of the car, connecting the catalytic converter with the muffler. Exhaust pipes are usually finished out of stainless steel, since the high heat conditions involved with the muffler system will cause rust.
