Just like the human body, automobiles also need to take out the chemicals and substances (waste) after it was used during the combustion process (digestion) of the gasoline intake (food intake). The whole exhaust system process starts with the exhaust manifold from the engine. The hot exhaust gases flowing from the manifold going is directed to the front or header pipe. It then passes through the catalytic converter to change the unburned hydrocarbons or fuel and carbon monoxide into water vapor to become less harmful substance or by product. The gas then passes through the hot converter which is then changed by the stainless steel case of the converter known as the ceramic honeycomb coated with a thin layer of platinum. After which, the gas flows to the remaining components of the exhaust system, goes through the tailpipe and finally out of the muffler.
Many performance cars nowadays like some Mini automobiles use dual converters and dual exhaust systems for the purpose of letting more gasses out of the engine. While most of the vehicles undergo the above discussed simple process, there are others that use a secondary muffler called resonators for additional effect and look. Since the whole structure becomes a bit bulkier than the original exhaust system, clamps and rubber mounts called hangers are being used to support the exhaust system under the vehicle, keeping it from dismounting and falling off.
