The catalytic converter is an emission-control product that ensures that the exhaust coming out of your vehicle is safe from harmful substances like hydrocarbons and other harmful byproducts of your engine’s combustion process. The reduction catalyst converts the nitrogen oxides into harmless emissions while the oxidation catalyst burns out the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, all of which are byproducts of gas or fuel combustion. A sensor, also located inside the converter, would also aid in controlling the air-to-fuel ration being burned in the engine to reduce the harmful emissions produced by the engine. After going though all these processes, the exhaust that goes out of the catalytic converter is safer and less harmful.

Present emission laws require all road vehicles to be equipped with an operational catalytic converter. Further, cars are still tested for their emission levels.
