Some parts of the car such as the clock, radio and power locks run even when the engine is at rest. Again, the battery provides for their electrical needs. When the vehicle has started running, electrical needs of the entire system are taken cared of by the alternator.
The alternator is initially puts out alternating current or AC voltage. This current passes through a series of diodes so that they can be used by the auto, now as direct current. The diode is an electrical one way check valve that permits the current to flow only in one direction. Compared to the DC generator, the AC alternator puts out great amount of current at low speed while the first requires high speed to put out high current flow. Voltage is generated as the rotor, which is a magnet, is rotated inside the stator, a statutory looped conductor. The polarity and the strength of the voltage would depend on the direction of the rotation, the number of conductors and speed of the rotor. Also, the voltage output would dependent on how strong the magnetic field is. The magnetic field is produced when current is applied to the stator from the voltage regulator.
