One thing constant in the auto industry is innovation. Every year since autos were invented countless new ideas are introduced, which paved way to more driving satisfaction and improved driving comfort. From the steam-powered vehicles in the late 18th century to the first gasoline powered internal combustion engine-equipped automobiles and the today’s high power and hybrid vehicles, the auto industry has gone a long way. The use of electricity in automobiles has likewise revolutionized automobiles. Before 1920s when cars began to use electrical parts, electricity was only being used to ignite the fuel mixture in the engine. Hand crank, acetylene lamps, and hand-squeezed air horn were used before electric starter, electric headlamps and electric horn were introduced.
Modern cars nowadays, such as those from Chevrolet, come with complex electrical system that would provide power to their highly advanced electrical components. How does your car’s electrical system work, you might ask. There are various components involved. The heart of the system is the battery, whose primary function is to start the engine. Upon turning on the ignition switch, a small amount of electricity is released from the battery to the solenoid. A magnetic field is created, causing the solenoid plunger to go forward and the shift yoke to move the starter drive. Eventually the pinion gear meshes with the flywheel. Then the battery releases more amount of power for the starter motor to spin the drive and turn the gears, thereby providing power to the crankshaft that prepares the cylinder for ignition.
When the engine is already running, the alternator is now the one in charge of supplying electricity to the rest of the system. The alternator or the alternating-current generator is also in charge of restoring electricity to the battery; thus, it is the vehicle’s main source of power. The battery only stores the power produced by the alternator. It particularly stores 12-volt power used for ignition. The battery also provides electricity for the auxiliary devices like the clock, radio and alarms when the engine is not running. Other auxiliary devices new cars are equipped with are cellular phones, power windows, doors and locks, defrosters, moonroof and a whole lot more.
Almost everything now is run by electricity and cars are no exception.
