The EGR valve of your Toyota vehicle is a vital component of its ignition and emissions systems. On vintage vehicles, mechanical EGR valve can be found while on newer vehicles, electronic engine EGR valve is employed. This component is usually positioned in the intake manifold and it lets a certain amount of exhaust gases back into the engine. No matter how it is constructed, the EGR valve does an important role in reducing unnecessary engine emissions and lessening engine knock. This simply means that obtaining the EGR valve that’s perfect for your vehicle is very necessary.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve or EGR valve is installed in order to lessen nitrous oxides by means of reducing the combustion temperature. The EGR functions by recirculating a metered quantity of exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. Intermixing the incoming air with the exhaust gas that’s recirculated usually dilutes the mixture with inert gas. Consequently, the adiabatic flame temperature is lowered and the quantity of excess oxygen is reduced. Also, the exhaust gas boosts the specific heat capacity of the said mix to lower the highest point of combustion temperature. Since the NOx formation develops more rapidly at high temperatures, the EGR is there to limit the production of NOx. NOx is made primarily when the mixture of oxygen and nitrogen is subjected to high temperatures.

The EGR valve can be opened by applying vacuum to the control diaphragm. Some EGR valves may need a metered quantity of exhaust back pressure before they will open. Since valve on later vehicles are electronic, it utilizes one or more solenoid or a tiny stepper motor. While the vehicle’s engine is cold at its idle, the EGR valve should stay close. Once the engine has already warmed up and is operating at part-throttle, that’s the only time that the valve will open. If ever the valve is disconnected or it sticks shut, the NOx emissions will soar, causing detonation. However, if the valve remains in the open position, or it doesn’t close all the way, then it seems like a vacuum leak leading to hesitation, rough idle and probable stalling.

In new diesel engines, the EGR gas is being cooled by means of a heat exchanger to allow the entry of a greater quantity of recirculated gas. Because diesel engines are unthrottled, the EGR will not lower the throttling losses in the same way that it does for the SI engines. However, the specific heat of exhaust gas is higher than the air so it will still work to reduce highest combustion temperatures. The efficiency of diesel engine is still enhanced by lessened dissociation and heat rejection.
