Emission management is a quite difficult task to maintain if you got low- quality exhaust and engine components. All emission control system parts need proper maintenance so that no harmful gases will sneak out from the exhaust system. The EGR Valve is one of the parts that you need to consider. This valve refers to the main element in the Engine Gas Recirculation system that regulates the combustion temperatures.
BMW 5 series EGR valve is usually mounted in the intake manifold, opening a space between the exhaust and intake manifold. Such space is needed to drive the exhaust back to the engine so as to minimize the combustion temperatures while controlling the formation of harmful gases. Some of the popular pollutants come from the mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. Apparently, nitrogen is formed because of high temperature and as it is exposed to air, NOx emissions are formed. These harmful emissions should not be released to the environment, otherwise, they will cause a lot of health problems. To avoid emissions problems from your BMW 5 Series vehicle, make sure that the EGR valve and other emission system parts are in perfect condition.
The EGR valve basically opens due to the effect of vacuum in its control diaphragm. Some valves are required with a metered amount of exhaust back pressure before they finally open. Some of the EGR valve designs that you can find today are equipped with more solenoids or small stepper motor to ensure more reliable electronic control. The EGR valve needs to remain close once the engine is idle or cold. When the engine warms up, the valve will finally open. There may be some time that the valve remains stuck shut even though the engine is already warm or at part/full throttle. This will result to NOx emissions and detonation/ knocks in the engine. But then, when the valve sticks open, vacuum leaks will be produced, resulting to stalling, hesitation, or rough idle.
All of the components included in the emissions system are prone to damages as they are exposed to extensive heat, pressure, and highly toxic gases. In case one of them gets damaged, be sure to have it replaced at once so as not to fail the emissions tests required by the government.
