The manual transmission has been the choice of many motorists because it provides better control and allows them to save on gas at the same time. But there could never be a good manual transmission without a good working clutch. Yes, the clutch is a crucial component of the manual transmission system that engages and disengages the engine to gearbox and transfers torque to the car's transmission in split-seconds. Included in a complete clutch kit are the clutch disc or clutch friction disc and clutch pressure plate. Basically, the clutch plate, springs, cover and release fingers are contained in the pressure plate. There are also some clutch kits that include pilot bushings or pilot bearings.
Located between the flywheel and pressure plate, your Cadillac clutch disc consists of metal disc covered with a frictional facing like the brake shoes or pads. Its lining is made of a woven or molded non-organic material that contains particles of soft metal such as aluminum or brass necessary for enhancing the strength of the lining. Also the series of radial grooves in the lining's face improves the grip between the flywheel and the disc. Mating with the transmission's input shaft is the splined hub in the center of the disc and thus providing a direct mechanical coupling between the two. The driveline shock and vibration is dampened by the group of torsional springs located between the clutch hub and lining.
The clutch disc is responsible for transmitting the engine torque directly to the input shaft of the transmission. When the clutch disc is coupled with the pressure plate and flywheel, it makes and breaks the flow of power from the engine to the transmission. Problems are of course indispensable with clutch discs. For one, since it is applied and released continuously throughout the course of normal driving, the lining will wear out making it a normal wear item. The common indication of a worn clutch is the so called clutch chatter, although this can also be the effect of oil leaking from the engine onto the clutch assembly, sprung clutch disc hub as well as improper alignment between the engine and transmission. Another problem is the clutch slippage which can result from different factors like worn pressure plate, binding or misadjusted linkage, improper clutch components and even normal wear.
