“Step on the clutch!!!” this is an instruction you often hear from a driving instructor teaching someone who wants to learn how to drive. Knowing when to step on the clutch pedal and when to release it is one of the first few things you will learn when studying how to drive. But while the term “clutch” has always been used and has always been known by people who know how to drive, not many of them really know how it works. Not many know how important a clutch is to their vehicle’s transmission system.
The clutch is that part of your vehicle’s drivetrain system that connects the engine to the manual transmission. While its function is fairly simple, one would be surprised that a typical clutch is composed of many parts. The first and most important part of the clutch is the clutch plate, which comes in direct contact with the engine’s flywheel whenever the clutch is engaged. Other parts of the clutch, which are basically responsible for engaging and disengaging it, are the pressure plate, diaphragm spring, throw-out bearing, release fork and clutch pedal. These various components are housed together by the clutch housing and the bell housing. For the pressure exerted on the clutch pedal to reach the release fork, a series of cables or a hydraulic system is also used.
The vehicle driver’s access to the clutch is the clutch pedal, the leftmost pedal that you can find in your vehicle. By engaging the clutch, that is when there is no pressure on the clutch pedal, the clutch plate would come in direct contact with the engine’s flywheel and the transmission would rotate in the same speed as the crankshaft of the engine. If, on the other hand, the clutch is disengaged by stepping on the clutch pedal, the clutch plate will release its contact with the engine’s flywheel. Disengaging the clutch allows the vehicle to sit still while the engine is running and also allows you to shift transmission gears.
Volvo vehicles are offered in either manual or automatic transmission configurations. While Volvo vehicles with automatic transmission also use a clutch plate, the entire clutch system is only used on Volvo vehicles with manual transmission units. Volvo clutches are in fact one of the most essential part for your Volvo manual transmission unit. Without the clutch, shifting gears in manual transmission units would be unsafe, or even impossible.
Clutches are indeed very important, and if the clutch of your Volvo is already worn out or damaged, you better replace it immediately with a new one. Here at Parts Train, we offer high quality Volvo clutches that will fit perfectly on your vehicle.
